Connecting WA to the Stars: ground-to-space laser links for precision space science

Laser links to satellites have the potential to increase measurement precision for fundamental and applied science missions by orders of magnitude, and overcome bottlenecks in the data capacity of radio communications from space. However, turbulence in the atmosphere distorts the laser beam and degrades the achievable precision and data rates. The Astrophotonics group at UWA is developing technologies to enable robust laser links to satellites for high-precision space science and next-generation communications and navigation. This talk will cover our exciting progress in developing these technologies, and the benefits that we expect from them.

The International Conference on Quantum Energy 2023, hosted by CSIRO, is the inaugural event of a biennial convention that focuses on the multifaceted topic of energy in quantum systems. This three-day conference brings a cross-disciplinary perspective on the fundamental understanding and technical engineering of quantum systems for energy harvesting, conversion, storage, and transport processes.

Join research experts, industry partners, and governmental bodies to find out about the latest developments in quantum thermodynamics, quantum transport, quantum information theory, quantum chemistry, quantum biology, spectroscopy, light-harvesting devices, optoelectronics, nuclear fusion, photochemistry, quantum materials, state-of-the-art battery technologies, and other quantum energy-related topics, to develop inter-disciplinary collaborations, find out about funding opportunities, and commercialisation pathways.

Between now and when we meet in December, there will be regular updates. We are planning a packed agenda of science, food, arts, cafes and culture as your introduction to the best of Melbourne, from its creative, exciting city centre to its buzzing neighbourhood hubs. Beneath the city's impressive façade lies the true heart and soul of the city; laneways that snake the city grid to reveal cafes and bars, fashion houses, boutiques, innovative cuisine, galleries, theatres and museums. It's the gateway to Victoria's world-class wineries, natural springs, peninsulas, spectacular coastline and alpine villages, making it the ideal destination for easy pre and post Conference touring access.
