The next AIP theoretical physics seminar speaker will be Gerard Milburn from 1pm AEST Thursday Aug 12.

Title: The thermodynamics of clocks

Speaker: Gerard Milburn, University of Queensland

Abstract: All clocks, periodic and non-periodic, are open dissipative systems driven from thermal equilibrium so that the Helmholtz free energy is increased. In this talk I will discuss the thermodynamic constraints for classical and quantum clocks. I will also discuss clocks driven not by work but my information extraction and make a connection to Rovelli's thermal time hypothesis as a proposed solution to the problem of time in quantum gravity.

Organisers: Murray Batchelor (ANU), Nicole Bell (Melbourne), Gavin Brennan (Macquarie), Eric Cavalcanti (Griffith), Susan Coppersmith (UNSW), Archil Kobakhidze (Sydney), Sergei Kuzenko (UWA), Karen Livesey (Newcastle), Meera Parish (Monash), Margaret Reid (Swinburne), James Zanotti (Adelaide), Magdalena Zych (UQ)
