We are happy to announce this year’s Australian Institute of Physics WA Student Conference, which is to be held on the 17th of November 2023 at the University of Western Australia. Each year the conference brings together young researchers from around Western Australia, providing them with the opportunity to present their research in a stimulating and friendly atmosphere. Come along to enjoy a day of networking with industry professionals and talented researchers!

Honours, Masters and PhD students are invited to present their research in the form of either a 10 minute talk or a poster presentation. We also invite undergraduate students to attend and learn about physics research opportunities available in Western Australia. Undergraduate students who have completed a research placement are encouraged to present a poster.

Relevant topics include but are not limited to:

  • Astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology
  • Biophysics
  • Computational physics
  • Experimental physics
  • Geophysics
  • Medical physics
  • Theoretical physics

We also encourage students working in other physics related fields to participate, such as physical chemistry, engineering, spectroscopy etc.

There will be a catered morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, a networking session to meet with industry professionals (see our sponsors below, who will be attending with trade displays), and prizes for the best presentations!

Registrations are now closed, however, all members are very welcome to drop by and view the presentations throughout the day.

Abstract Preparation

For abstract preparation you may use either Microsoft Word or LaTeX. Please use the templates provided in this file. Please ensure that your abstract conforms to the format of the templates, as we may ask you to resubmit if it does not.

If you are writing an abstract for the first time, you might find some useful tips here.

This year's AIP WA student conference was a huge success, bringing together over thirty HDR students to present their work, along with many other physics enthusiasts! The quality of the presentations were of a very high standard across the board, and we congratulate all presenters. The conference proceedings may be accessed at the following link.

We are pleased to announce the prize winners for the day:

  • Best presentation: Dylan Griggs - Space Situational Awareness at the Site of the SKA-low Using an SKA-low Precursor Radio Telescope
  • Runner-up prize: Tyrone O'Doherty - Contact Binaries: Impostors Among Ellipsoidal Variables and the Hunt for Black Holes
  • Best poster: Christopher Lee - Probing the Magneto-ionic Interstellar Medium and Ionosphere Using Precursor Low-frequency SKA Stations

We thank all participants, sponsors and volunteers for their support of the event and for contributing to the amazing atmosphere during the breaks. We also acknowledge Ultimo Catering & Events for providing fantastic food throughout the day.
