62nd LONDON INTERNATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM (LIYSF)
The annual London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) is a two-week residential course hosted at the renowned research university Imperial College London. Our aim is to unite outstanding talent from all nations and provide a deeper insight into science and its applications for the benefit of all mankind.
Speakers already confirmed include prestigious scientists, including; Nobel Prize winner Professor James Rothman, Professor Dame Julia King, Professor Martin Rees, Professor Fiona Watt, Professor Saiful Islam and LIYSF President, Professor Clare Elwell.
The forum attracts 500 of the globe’s leading young scientists, aged from 16-21 and visiting from over 65 countries. Along with an active social calendar and a focus on cultural education and forming lasting friendships, the program includes lectures, demonstrations from leading scientists and visits to industrial sites, research centers, scientific institutions, world-class laboratories and universities.
The 62nd LIYSF is held 28th July to 11th August 2021. The participation fee is GBP 495 per student to attend LIYSF VIRTUAL and GBP 2,195 per student for the inclusive residential programme, with all meals and accommodation provided. Applications are open until end of May 2021.

Abstract: When we press FIRE on the most powerful laser in the world,
we deliver a packet of light that is a thousand billion billion times more
intense than the sunlight you feel while out on Bondi beach in peak
summer! That’s super intense! We can use this extreme power to
recreate the conditions at the centre of Sun and in the process release
vast amounts of energy in a clean and safe way. Harnessing this power
for electricity generation is an inspiring story. It combines pure and
applied physics and requires engineering to handle the most extreme conditions in our solar system!
Biography: Ceri Brenner is a plasma physicist and innovator who uses the most powerful lasers in the world to study what happens when extreme bursts of light come into contact with matter and is using this knowledge to design new X-ray technology that can see through steel! The extreme physics she studies can also be applied for understanding supernova explosions in space or how we can ignite a star on earth for clean electricity generation.
The Claire Corani Memorial prizes, available for award to the top second-year female Physics student at each SA university in 2017, will be presented at the lecture.

“Innovation with the most powerful lasers in the world”
Each year the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) funds a national tour by an eminent female physicist. This year’s AIP Women in Physics lecturer will be Dr Ceri Brenner, an experimental physicist from the UK. Ceri’s AIP lecture in Sydney is in partnership with the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Macquarie University.

When Ceri shines the CLF’s super-intense lasers at a solid, liquid or a gas, they super-heat to millions of degrees in less than a trillionth of a second and rip apart the material structure to transform into plasma—the fourth state of matter.

Pressing FIRE on the most powerful laser in the world
The Australia Institute of Physics proudly presents Dr Ceri Brenner as the 2018 Women in Physics Lecturer. Dr Brenner is a physicist working in the UK’s Central Laser Facility, using the most powerful lasers in the world to develop innovative imaging technologies by creating creating small, high powered particle accelerators that produce x-rays, neutrons, and ions. She especially enjoys inspiring the next generation into this exciting profession and takes physics concepts that everyone learns at school to a whole new level.
The 2017 AIP Lecture Series will be delivered by Dr Helen Maynard-Casely.
Helen Maynard-Casely is a Planetary Scientist based at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) where she uses the neutrons and synchrotron x-rays to investigate the materials that make up our solar system. She has a PhD in high-pressure physics from the University of Edinburgh and has been lucky enough to have collected data in facilities all over the world, blowing up a few diamonds along the way. Always keen to tell anyone who’ll listen about planetary science, she writes a column ‘The Tides of Venus’ for The Conversation and tweets @Helen_E_MC.
Helen’s talk “Journeying to the centres of the planets” takes us on a journey, not just to visit the planets of our solar system, but to get to know them more intimately though understanding their varied and downright dangerous insides. We’ve yet to actually dive under the clouds of the gas giants, crack through the ice of the dwarf planets or drill into the rocks of the terrestrial planets – so how do we know what lies beneath planetary surfaces?
An additional regional lecture will be delivered in Mount Isa in 2017 by Dr Sean Powell. Sean Powell’s research experience is in theoretical and computational modelling of particle dynamics and diffusion and MRI characterisation of diffusion in complex pore spaces. In addition, Sean has industry experience in computer software and hardware engineering, 3D visualisation systems, and solar thermal energy research. Presently, he leads the biofabrication research team within the Biofabrication and Tissue Morphology research group at the Queensland University of Technology. His quantitative and problem solving skills as a physicist complement those of the multi-disciplinary team of biologists, organic chemists, clinicians and medical engineers. He is also passionate about learning and teaching and lectures undergraduate physics at all year levels from introductory to advanced.
This year’s AIP youth lecture tour will promote physics to senior high school students and science teachers in a selection of regional centres throughout Queensland.
Commencing in August, Dr Helen Maynard-Casely and Dr Sean Powell will present their lectures in major centres across Queensland.
