Dear {Contact_First_Name},
AIP Honorary Fellow Prof Brian Schmidt
AC says there’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure Australia’s
sovereign research capability. Last week he spoke to the National Press Club,
with his colleague, economist Richard Holden. I encourage you to take a look at
their compelling perspectives on research in Australia on ABC
iview.
The AIP is organising two public
national tours in support of Quantum Year.
The quantum flavoured Marie Curie
Lectures kicked off in Melbourne last month with Dr Danielle Holmes talking
about the Quantum Century.
She and Dr Sol Jacobsen, the AIP's 2025 Women in Physics Lecturers, will be touring
Australia through to the end August.
July also sees the famed Nobel Laureate
Donna Strickland speaking at free public lectures at UNSW, RMIT, UQ, and the
Australian Academy of Science. Her fundamental research led her to find a way
to create high-intensity laser pulses which are now used across industry, and
for eye surgery. Our thanks to Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) for
supporting Donna’s tour.
The two tours and the many other
quantum events around the country gives physicists an opportunity to
demonstrate how investment in fundamental research transforms society. Please
register your #IYQ events and see details of other events at www.quantum2025.org.au.
Please use your personal and
professional networks to spread the Quantum word and help the Australian
community start their quantum journey in 2025!
Finally, a special thanks to departing
editor of our Australian Physics magazine, Dr David Hoxley. The
Australian physics community greatly appreciates your huge effort.
Thanks,
Stu Midgley
