Dear {Contact_First_Name},

AIP Honorary Fellow Prof Brian Schmidt AC says there’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure Australia’s sovereign research capability. Last week he spoke to the National Press Club, with his colleague, economist Richard Holden. I encourage you to take a look at their compelling perspectives on research in Australia on ABC iview.

The AIP is organising two public national tours in support of Quantum Year.

The quantum flavoured Marie Curie Lectures kicked off in Melbourne last month with Dr Danielle Holmes talking about the Quantum Century.

She and Dr Sol Jacobsen, the AIP's 2025 Women in Physics Lecturers, will be touring Australia through to the end August.

July also sees the famed Nobel Laureate Donna Strickland speaking at free public lectures at UNSW, RMIT, UQ, and the Australian Academy of Science. Her fundamental research led her to find a way to create high-intensity laser pulses which are now used across industry, and for eye surgery. Our thanks to Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) for supporting Donna’s tour.

The two tours and the many other quantum events around the country gives physicists an opportunity to demonstrate how investment in fundamental research transforms society. Please register your #IYQ events and see details of other events at www.quantum2025.org.au.

Please use your personal and professional networks to spread the Quantum word and help the Australian community start their quantum journey in 2025!

Finally, a special thanks to departing editor of our Australian Physics magazine, Dr David Hoxley. The Australian physics community greatly appreciates your huge effort.

Thanks,

Stu Midgley

Join Prof Jagadish and Prof Angstmann at the AIP Summer Meeting

Abstract submission is already open for the AIP’s Summer Meeting, to be held from 1-5 December. You can register for the event from 7 June. The list of Plenary Speakers include:

  • AAS President Prof Chennupati Jagadish speaking on “Semiconductor Nanostructures for Optoelectronics Applications”
  • AIP award-winner Prof Elizabeth Angstmann on Physics Education.

Join a conversation at the teachers’ breakfast on 4 December on how collaboration between schools, universities, and the broader physics community can support and sustain student engagement in physics.

Why stars shine, how birds don’t get lost, and other wonders of the quantum world

School children and physicists were delighted by Dr Danielle Holmes at her first Marie Curie Lecture in Melbourne last month.

Dr Holmes took the audience on a journey from the photoelectric effect to how birds navigate vast oceans, including experiments with lasers, static electricity, and pipe cleaners.

The Marie Curie Lecture will tour Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney, and Wollongong in July and August.

Women in Physics Lecturer award nomination extension

Nominations for the 2026 AIP Women in Physics Lecturer award have been extended until 15 June.

This award is for women who have made a significant research contribution to physics and effectively communicate their work to the public.

The awardee will receive a medal and be supported to give the national Marie Curie Lectures.

Nominate here.

Vale Emeritus Professor Peter Teubner FAIP

The AIP extends condolences to the family and friends of AIP Fellow Emeritus Professor Peter Teubner, who passed away this April.

Em/Prof Teubner studied physics at The University of Adelaide, was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, and worked on atomic physics at Flinders University. He was an active member of the AIP SA Branch, and received Fellowship of the AIP.

Read about his history of physics in Adelaide here and here.

Thank you for supporting physics in Australia

Thank you for being a valued member of the AIP!

If you have any questions or would like to discuss any initiatives, please email aip@aip.org.au.
