Dear {Contact_First_Name},

Congratulations to the AIP Fellows elected in 2024: Prof Daoyi Dong, Prof Joanne Etheridge, Prof Andy Martin, Prof Harry Quiney, Prof Soumitra Satapathi, Prof Michael Tobar, A/Prof Muhammad Usman, and Prof Zongyou Yin.

The AIP is partnering with Cosmos Education and the CSIRO’s Double Helix Extra to run the Quantum Explained Challenge – a competition to explain quantum mechanics to high school students. Entries close 2 December. Read below for details.

The countdown to the AIP Congress is on! Look out for the public lecture by Chris Ferrie, author of 'Quantum Physics for Babies', talks by prize and award winners, and physics education focused activities on the Wednesday. Don’t forget to purchase tickets for the Congress Dinner, which will be held at the MCG on the Wednesday night! The full Congress program is available here.

The AIP VIC branch ran a field trip to the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory (SUPL) last week. Twenty AIP members made the journey 1km underground to see the new low-radiation underground physics lab – the first in the southern hemisphere! More below.

The General Assembly of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) was held last month. Six Australian representatives were elected as members of IUPAP commissions – including Prof Manjula Sharma as Chair of the Commission on Physics Education, and Prof Jan de Gier as Vice-Chair of the Commission on Mathematical Physics – a great outcome. More below.

Applications for the 2025 AIP Women in Physics lectureship close soon. Please bring this high-profile speaking tour to the attention of suitable candidates. Read about the 2024 tour below.

Best wishes,

Nicole Bell

Lightbulb to quantum: 8 lectures, 23 schools, plenty of radio

From a humble lightbulb to quantum technologies that have changed our lives, theoretical physicists push human knowledge into new and interesting directions.

This year’s Women in Physics tour by Professor Susan Coppersmith consisted of 8 public lectures, 23 school visits, and numerous radio interviews across all Australian states and the ACT.

“The tour was so meaningful, and I am incredibly inspired by the dedicated educators and enthusiastic students that I met,” says Prof Susan Coppersmith.

AIP members visit the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory

The AIP VIC branch ran a field trip to the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory (SUPL) last week.

This facility is located 1km beneath the surface, in the Stawell Gold Mine in regional Victoria, to host science projects that require an ultra-low radiation environment.

Twenty AIP members made the journey underground and heard from SUPL Facility Manager Kim Mintern-Lane and AIP President (and dark matter physicist!) Prof Nicole Bell.
