Dear {Contact_First_Name},

It is my pleasure to announce that the AIP Congress this year will be held in Adelaide from 11 to 16 December. Abstract submissions and early-bird registrations will open 20 Apr. It looks like it will be our biggest gathering in a while, and I am looking forward to seeing you in person.

The AIP was invited to the Senate Estimates Hearing based on our submission regarding the Australian Research Council Amendment (Ensuring Research Independence) Bill 2018. We were on the STEM panel together with the Australian Academy of Science, the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, and Science and Technology Australia.

The panel pushed for funding independence, argued that the recent veto breached international best practice, and warned that the common excessive delays in grant announcements, due to ministerial sign-off, negatively impacts early career researchers near the end of their fixed-term contracts.

While the bill was unfortunately voted down, it was good to hear a unified voice from the science and technology sector with specific support for the humanities community which was impacted by the six vetoes last hear.

Finally, we have 11 AIP awards open for nomination, including two established this year – the Women in Leadership Medal and the Communication Award. The deadline is 1 May so please consider nominating a colleague or yourself. Details on eligibility and selection criteria are on our website.

All the best,

Sven Rogge
President, Australian Institute of Physics

24th AIP Congress in Adelaide in December

Optics and photonics, the latest industry tech, and catered poster sessions will feature at this year's Congress

We look forward to welcoming you in Adelaide from 11-16 Dec. It will be the first large in-person meeting of the Australian physics community since the AIP congress in Perth in 2018.

We will be co-locating with the Australian and New Zealand Conferences on Optics and Photonics (ANZCOP) and the 7th International Workshop on Speciality Optical Fibers (WSOF).

Odd radio circles: a closer look

A new, detailed image of odd radio circles (ORCs) has been captured by the South African Astronomy Observatory’s MeerKAT radio telescope.

ORCs were first revealed by the ASKAP radio telescope - owned and operated by Australia’s national science agency CSIRO - and quickly became objects of fascination.
