We are in the fourth quarter of 2022 and the 24th AIP Congress is just around the corner – happening from 11 to 16 December in Adelaide. I am locking in travel now. Registrations are open until 2 Dec. I hope to see you there! We have the honour of welcoming the president of the IOP, Prof Sheila Rowan to jointly present the Harrie Massey award at the Congress. We're pleased to see her back. She was also our 2014 Women In Physics Lecturer. It is fantastic to note that Susan Scott FAIP (ANU) has become the first Australian to win a prestigious Blaise Pascal Medal in Physics from the European Academy of Sciences, while Xiaojing Hao FAIP (UNSW) has been inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. Staying with women who transform technology, Sarah Harmer (Flinders University) won the South Australian Women in Innovation Award in Science. Please let us know when you or a colleague have something to celebrate so we can share your news. The AIP will celebrate its 60th anniversary in February 2023. Please start thinking about what ‘memorabilia’ or stories you may have to share from the early days of the AIP, to help us celebrate the anniversary. More below. |

AIP Congress program now live!
The program for the 24th AIP Congress is now live on the Congress website:
- 10 plenary talks spanning topics of quantum sensing, the future of gravitational wave detection and astronomy, applications of nanophotonics, physics in education, and more.
- A public lecture on ‘Cosmological Conundrums’.
- Two poster sessions.
- Plus, networking opportunities including a Congress dinner, diversity breakfast, and a high tea focused on physics education.

Ripples in space: Susan Scott wins Blaise Pascal Medal
The prestigious Blaise Pascal Medal for Physics 2022 has been awarded to Distinguished Professor Susan Scott FAIP of ANU for her work over three decades, including discoveries in general relativity, cosmology and gravitational wave science. “I am the first Australian, and Australian woman, to be awarded this medal, so this is a tremendous honour,” Professor Scott said. Cosmological Conundrums: public lecture, Adelaide
Deep dive into the foundations of our cosmological model and hear the latest updates on dark energy, black holes, and gravitational waves in a public lecture by UQ astrophysicist Professor Tamara Davis, who was also AIP’s 2011 Women in Physics Lecturer. Cosmological Conundrums and the Dark Side of the Universe will be presented at the Adelaide Convention Centre on 12 December as part of the 2022 AIP Congress in Adelaide. More info and register here.
